Travelling on a student visa

12 April 2022

From 11:59pm Tuesday 12 April, holders of a valid student visa, who continue to meet the conditions of this visa, may travel to New Zealand. This means that you will no longer need a border exception before travelling to New Zealand on your student visa.

If you decide to travel to New Zealand, please have access to up-to-date evidence proving you still meet the conditions of your visa. For example, evidence of an email that proves you:
  • meet the funds requirements for students, and
  • are studying, or will resume studying, the same course at the same education provider that your student visa was granted for.

Visa conditions

Travellers must understand and comply with all visa conditions. This means if your visa was to work for a specific employer then you must still have that job for the same employer to be able to travel on that visa. Visa holders can check travel and other visa conditions online. If your visa is due to expire soon you can also explore other visa options on the Immigration New Zealand website.
