The government has asked the Productivity Commission to inquire into immigration settings and recommend what changes are required to meet the future needs of New Zealand economy and society.
The office of the Productivity Commission confirmed this in a press release this morning.
“The Government has requested the Productivity Commission Te Komihana What Hua o Aoteroa to inquire into what working-age immigration policy settings would best facilitate New Zealand’s long-term economic growth and promote the wellbeing of New Zealanders,” the press release said.

Decisions of the Immigration and Protection Tribunal (IPT) show that of all the immigration appeals heard in the last reporting year, over 35% were allowed, due to incorrect decision-making by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). The number was even higher in the two previous years, at over 40%. While some human error is understandable (but still not acceptable!), the figures demonstrate the discouraging frequency with which INZ get it wrong.

A new online questionnaire has been released on the Unite Against Covid-19 website to help people get an idea of when they will receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
About 80 per cent of staff working at New Zealand’s visa application centre in Beijing are direct employees of a company owned by the Beijing police, inflaming concerns that the Chinese government could gain access to information about citizens trying to leave the country.
Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said he was happy with security arrangements at the centre, which the Government says protects the privacy of people applying for visas.

Auckland will move to alert level 1 from midday today, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced.
In a media conference at 11.30am today, Ardern said Cabinet met last night to make a preliminary decision on the alert levels.
Auckland is now at Covid-19 alert level 2 and the rest of the country at alert level 1.
Jacinda Ardern announced the change in alert levels on Friday.
